Any mention of Punk Rock band Pussy Riot triggers thoughts of controversy. With activism at the heart of their purpose, they gained worldwide recognition for their unwavering commitment to a cause that did not pass without some consequence for members Nadya Tolokonnikova and Masha Alyokhina.
Word of the band's first North American tour that included a stop at St. Paul's Turf Club on March 10th, generated enough curiosity to sell the event out in advance. The music portion of this show primarily consisted of a vocal / rap performance by Tolokonnikova with accompaniment from one other band member. Not abandoning their mission to deliver a political message, it was insightful to incorporate local relevance with an opening speech delivered by Samantha Pree-Stinson and an interview session with Tolokonnikova conducted by filmmaker Tommy Franklin.
